A classic RTS revival with modern enhancements
Tempest Rising is a base-building RTS set in a war-torn Earth after a nuclear catastrophe. Inspired by 90s and 2000s classics, this action game features three asymmetrical factions, deep strategy, and fast-paced combat. With single-player campaigns and competitive multiplayer, it blends classic RTS mechanics with modern refinements.
Tempest Rising expands RTS gameplay with two playable factions—the Global Defense Forces and the Tempest Dynasty—each with unique units, economies, and combat styles. Players must build bases, command armies, and secure resources. The mysterious Tempest vines add intrigue to the high-stakes battle.
Strategy, warfare, and survival
In Tempest Rising, you’ll command either the Global Defense Forces, a mobile peacekeeping group, or the determined Tempest Dynasty. Across two 11-mission campaigns, you can tailor your army for each task. Both sides aim to understand and control the beneficial yet mysterious Tempest vines spreading across Earth. Unseen threats also emerge as the Tempest's origins become clear to you as you progress.
You'll engage in traditional RTS base building, alongside combat that feels quick and impactful. There are three distinct and important factions in the game, with two available initially, each providing a different economic approach and playstyle, and their own set of units. The game also includes two single-player campaigns with story scenes between missions, plus skirmish, custom games, and competitive multiplayer.
That said, while the game offers deep strategy and satisfying combat, only two factions are available at launch, with the third arriving later. This may disappoint those seeking full faction variety early on. However, RTS fans will appreciate its well-designed campaigns, multiplayer matchmaking, and faction diversity.
The Rally and Recon update
The Rally & Recon Update brings you exciting new features like 2v2 Ranked mode with leaderboards, letting you queue with friends or solo. You can now adjust the unit population cap up to 500 in custom matches, and a new lobby chat menu helps you connect. Plus, a basic Spectator Mode is here, and you can skip intro cinematics, along with six new maps for varied gameplay.
This update also includes extensive balance adjustments for both Global Defense Force and Tempest Dynasty units, aiming to refine combat progression and viability across all tech levels. Numerous bug fixes across general gameplay, multiplayer, campaign, UI, and achievements mean a smoother experience for you. It’s great that these changes address previous issues, improving overall stability and fairness for existing gamers and newcomers alike.
For RTS commanders
Tempest Rising is a must-play for fans of classic real-time strategy games. While the third faction’s delayed release may leave some wanting more, the rich strategic gameplay, engaging campaigns, and competitive multiplayer make it a worthy addition to any RTS player’s library.
